After paralysis changed his life, Willem Hooft reinvented kiteboarding—and himself—proving that passion has no limits.

Project Description

Willem Hooft was living an ordinary life as an engineer when a motorbike accident changed everything. A high-speed collision left him paralyzed from the waist down, and in an instant, his future became uncertain. During six months of intensive rehabilitation, Willem relearned basic tasks—like swimming and getting dressed—and slowly began to rebuild his independence. But his real turning point came when he decided not just to recover, but to return to the ocean.

Refusing to give up his lifelong passion for surfing and kiteboarding, Willem helped develop a new form of the sport—sit-kiteboarding—adapting the gear and technique to his physical reality. Two years after the accident, he made his comeback on the water in South Africa, alongside his childhood friend Wouter. That moment sparked a journey of innovation, athletic achievement, and personal growth.

Since then, Willem has broken world records, including a sit-kiteboarding jump over 10 meters, and has worked with experts to design high-performance, custom equipment for adaptive athletes. He also founded the Willem Hooft Foundation to make water sports accessible to people with physical disabilities, organizing events and introducing others to the freedom and power of the ocean.

As a motivational speaker, Willem shares his story around the world—not as a story of loss, but of possibility. His message is simple but profound: even in the face of life-changing setbacks, passion, creativity, and the proper support can open entirely new paths. Through his sport, his foundation, and his words, Willem continues to inspire people to chase meaning, push limits, and live fully.
